ETFs: Brazil

Monday 18/02/13

Brazil: I spent my time in hospital today reading up on some Brazil based ETFs.

Brazil is classified as an Emerging Market and as part of what is known as the BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Emerging market refers to those nations experiencing rapid growth and industrialisation. Brazil may end up being dragged further along this development route, and more quickly than some of the other nations, due to a few major events scheduled to be held in the country over the next few years. These events include: World Youth day 2013, the Soccer World Cup 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.

Given this possible market stimulus I decided to check out some ETF plays to capture any possible movement. I’m a little late to this party on two of the ETFs but some others look like setting up with possible trading opportunities in the near future. A few of these don’t have US Options and those that do tend to be rather illiquid so trading discretion is certainly required. This list is not exhaustive by any means but contains those ETFs that appeared most frequently during my research. Also, please note, that these are more speculative trades than what I usually consider and post about.

BRAQ: Global X Brasil Consumer ETF : no Options.

This ETF has at least 80% of its total assets in securities of consumer companies that are domiciled in, principally traded in or whose revenues are primarily from Brazil.

This ETF is close to an all time high but looking like it could be bullish.

BRF: Market Vectors Brazil Small Cap ETF: Options available.

This ETF reflects the Small Cap index.

Trading in a triangle on the weekly chart and I’ll watch for any bullish breakout.

BRXX: EG Shares Brazil Infrastructure: no Options.

This ETF invests at least 80% of its net assets in Brazilian infrastructure companies included in the Brazil Infrastructure underlying index.

This ETF has already had a bullish triangle breakout but, sadly, this ETF doesn’t come with Options. I’ll watch it though.

EWZ: iShares MSCI Brazil Capped Index ETF: Options available.

This ETF seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the MSCI Brazil 25/50 Index.

Trading in a triangle on the weekly chart and I’ll watch for any bullish breakout. The Options aren’t too liquid though with fairly wide spreads.

GML: SPDR S&P Emerging Latin America: no Options.

This ETF seeks to track the performance of the S&P Latin America BMI Index.

Trading in a triangle on the weekly chart and I’ll watch for any bullish breakout.

ILF:iShares S&P Latin America 40 Index ETF: Options available

This ETF seeks results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the S&P Latin America 40TM.

Trading in a triangle on the weekly chart and I’ll watch for any bullish breakout.

EWZS: iShares MSCI Brazil Small Cap Index ETF: no Options.

This ETF seeks results that correspond to the price and yield performance of the MSCI Brazil Small Cap Index.

This ETF has already had a bullish triangle breakout but, sadly, this ETF doesn’t come with Options. I’ll watch it though.
